It's probably just a dropped ceiling. My schools always had them, though now that I think about it, that may not be the case in Japan.

Dropped ceilings tend to be made out of light plates just lying on a framework, but here it got long cracks, which wouldn't happen unless they're rigidly attached and connected to each other equally rigidly to make the crack spread.
