I feel that was a really good way to handle the translation! I always confuse honmei and giri chocolate, and what you chose sounded much more natural while still preserving the core meaning of the sentence.
Was going to say the same - that's a /really/ good way to handle it in this context, it should probably be used more often when the author is aiming for a touch of ambiguity. The way Japanese handles "love" seems to be far more nuanced than English the language can handle readily, as well as Anglo cultures more broadly - you need this kind of thing to convey more of the subtleties, where it's even possible.
