Alright. I'll just say my honest opinions here.
The manga's atmosphere is pretty good. The way it's presented is the thing that got me hooked (an exaggeration, but for the sake of this comment it's fine).
Whether I like it or not, the ex is pretty much an integral part of the character development of the MC. As said by the shop worker, the MC has everything wrong with him. He isn't good, he isn't handsome, he isn't smart, and to top it all off, he's a hesitant coward with the penchant to lie and make circles out of everything. The ex might be spouting convenient truths for himself, but it's literal truth for our dear MC nevertheless. But, as it is right now, he's trying to change. And that's where the problem lies, with 'trying'. He's still in that stage, where everything must be 'tried' first, whether it be due to fear of failure, plain hesitancy, or both.
But even so, with 'trying', the hope that he will eventually change for the better is set. He will change, not just at the time I probably want. I despise slow character development. Sometimes, it's because it hits too close to home. Most of the time, it's because it's agonizing waiting for that clear change, one where we as readers will finally be proud of the MC. It's stupid, but idk, I simply like thinking that the readers are an integral part of the actual story. So I guess, tl;dr, despite the manga being quite shallow (at times), there's a profound depth to it at the end of it all.
