The best example of a country with working traditional ‘trial’ marriages is Scotland. There you could marry as a trial for a year before deciding if it would work for you as a couple for life. The marriage could then be annulled with no repercussions. Both partners could marry again and any children from that first year would be legitimate. If they decided to stay together they could have a second ceremony to seal the deal but the wedding would be counted from the first wedding.
This was most often done with couples who did not know each other well at first so they would get a year to see if they would be a good marriage.
