I don't really get the dad character since back when he made a comment about how Maki's doing too much chores, and then now this lady asking if Maki wants to live with his father. Literally nothing would change since the dad is a workaholic and would be home even less often compared to his mom.

Custody arc. 😰
This is about the future. Maki's Dad's career is still way too unstable right now to set down roots (the terminal project will likely not need his presence for much longer) but wants him to at least consider staying together during university when he might have a permanent gig. He's fully aware that his ex can give him the stability he can't. His insistence that she not work full-time is part of his plan to have his son finally feel secure.

So does Maki cut ties officially with his dad later in the light novel?

"I am a kid after all" - a phrase no kid would ever utter. How could the author seriously think this is a realistic piece of dialogue hahaha.

It does make sense because he is not just saying out of the blue, he is quoting Umi's dad.

The point is he is doing something unreasonable and selfish for the first time and its justifying "because i'm a child" so yeah, I would say its quite realistic and well done.

Waaaas not expecting that request. That might be too much. He would never leave his mom on her own and alone.

We don't really see him after LN 2, in no small part because the next point in the story where he might become relevant again would be in the latter half of Maki's third year when university decisions would be finalized, a point that's a full year in the future of both the WN and LN.

I don't know how I feel about this... Really I am here for romcom, but this is quite dark, but a brave choice. I hope it does not focus on it for too many chapters...

Even if you think he should live with his dad or joint custody or whatever this stranger has absolutely no right to ask him that kinda question wtf
