Just cozy family stuff.

If you do it every year, it's a tradition, even if you do it at different places.

I'm not sure she has enough hair to have that hairdo.

"You already have a girlfriend, so you gotta work on your vocab for praising girls."
It's the opposite. If you're together, you learn to interpret each others' intentions better, so fewer words are needed. Doesn't mean you should stop communicating, but if you make your intent clear, that's enough. Though I disagree that he shouldn't praise any other girls. But that's up to him.

Ah, he mentioned her fragile sandals and helps her. That gives her a +2 in avoiding breaking them.

How important is the small stuff?
World-building. Establishing the relationship with Riku more firmly (something that'll be important when we get to adapting V5), showing the depth of the bond between Umi and Maki in all its sweetness and spice (losing their banter about her bathing him while he's at her place sick was downright criminal). Those sorta things.

There are also some significant changes from the LN. Maki's insensitive comment about the mochi machine is actually part of a monologue from Sora about how long her marriage has lasted. Time is spent between Maki and Umi in her room under the pretense of playing a borrowed video game but really, in Maki's words, "messing around". Maki only goes home briefly to change into his own clothes (rather than the hand-me-downs from Riku he's been recuperating in) and is already back there when Sora is fitting Umi in her Hatsumoude gear rather than meeting up with her near the shrine later. Umi's jealousy when Yuu flirts (semi-unconsciously) with Maki is a lot more demonstrative than her little pout here (sure hope his side healed quickly). And Maki is well-versed in shrine etiquette, despite rarely making the annual visit; Nina is the one who blanks on it every time.

The last chapter and a half covered about 70 pages of the EN version of the LN, so we lost a lot.
