Jeez Oscar is shedding more hair than my dog. Probably due to extreme stress.

Thought it was a misunderstanding at first but now it doesn't seem like it

But why did he hate Flora so much, just cause she was a rich girl? I mean I hate rich people too but not to a personal degree

@Simply_Fiction He came from a middle class family with a father who dictated his whole life while she came from and upper class family where her parents supported her in her own decisions.

More or less she has everything he wants which in hormonal teenager mind means she has had life too good and needs to suffer like he does.

Life is unfair. The faster one can accept that, the earlier one can decide to do something about it.

My judgment will depend on how far Oscar actually takes it. The notebook seems to be intact, but there's also the emotional aspect.

I'm actually more curious to know where all the creepy cats come from.

It's really difficult to understand what sort of a story arc the author wants for Oscar.
I mean, how on earth does any of this makes him a likeable character to root for? From day 1 he was the comic-relief character nobody could've taken seriously, and by now we're also learning that he's also a douchebag.

Damn Oscar, you used to be such a shitty kid.

I mean, we've seen that in the present he's not longer that kind of trash, but still, he's gonna need to apologize later (and posibly more).

I'm not a real fan of him or anything, but I also really really don't like this modern trend of treating kids, even if they're teens, as tiny adults. They're not. They're young and impulsive, going through genuine brain biochemistry changes and major body changes, finding their identities, etc., and often without much foundation of adversarial experience yet. A lot of us did foolish things as kids, usually minor granted but sometimes only through luck. Ie., a friend of mine was 17, had just got his license, was chatting with shotgun person, me and another in the back seat, and ran right through a red light in a city late at night. And nothing happened except we were all "HOLY SHIT DAMN STOP" and nearly had heart attacks and remembered that, well, forever, so it became something we didn't do again. And again it was like 11:30pm and there were almost no pedestrians there. But that's just a probability thing, with a bit of bad luck, somebody else walking or some late biker with no lights (which does happen), that could have all gone very differently. It wasn't some inherent virtue of ours that stopped it, nor some inherent vice that caused it (none of us drank or used drugs), we were young. And high school in particular is often a mad house.

So it's worth being careful before throwing stones from our houses of glass. The point of school and growing up is to, well, grow up. People aren't fixed in stone to be judged forevermore by their teen years thankfully. His current obsession with her without being straight forward would be more concerning, though clearly just a comedy thing here. But someone being a punk with family troubles as a kid? It'd be too their credit that they grew up better wouldn't it?

well said @zanonyn

some people become one-track minded once they learn someone's past and they themselves become stuck with that mindset

High School Oscar and Current Oscar might as well be separate characters at this point.

He has some nerve to try and court her now.

Hey, remember when I ruined your life? Fun times, huh? Wanna go out?

@zanonyn nope. Having a shitty parent isn't an excuse to be jealous and bullying someone else. People with worse childhood have always been kind and caring, so still no pity for Oscar here for being an ass nor for later being a creep.

I cannot possibly see how your story about your friend, at all reflects on Oscar. I can go on a spiel about his character and motives here, but honestly the most important tidbit here is that: Nothing about this arc makes Oscar any more likeable. That was my point.
Showing that he was a psycho-kid, and acted in ways to intentionally wounds the MC, doesn't make him likable. It doesn't make us root for him, as a person. I never argued that all teenagers should have a psychology degree, and should never behave like brats. I was just wondering what on earth ran through the author's brain, to make Oscar, the one character that keeps romantically pursuing the MC, into someone who gets constantly rejected by the MC, someone who's unlikable -- and then prove how even more unlikable he is, by exposing his childhood psychopathic behavior.

Just, what is the goal here?

It's not an "excuse", but it's also not a permanent brand forever either.

@Solipsist
It's you weirdos who are going nuts over someone acting out and being a dumb jock in high school. All this amounts to is basic silly background, Oscar was apparently a "rebel" and punk in his teens, and then at some point put all that into the past and become an officer. It just creates contrast and a reason for tension. Why do you think it's somehow supposed to be "likeable"? The only thing I'd argue with is you saying that "he's a douchebag" present-tense because of him getting jealous over someone more fortunate in school. Jealousy like that isn't a healthy mature emotion, but he wasn't mature. If this was set in school it'd be a different story, but it's not, so we can consider what they've all done with their lives afterwards.
