@SummerK arming swords were standard issue to most soldiers in medieval times, but they served the same purpose pistols serve troops today: as a sidearm/backup weapon for standard troops, and a status indicator for higher up troops. Even outside of combat, swords were often carried mostly because they were smaller and lighter then most other weapons. spears and halberds were standard issue primary weapons. generally, reach trumps all back then.
