There's already a wuxia tag as well as a martial arts tag why should we add a cultivation tag when it already falls in either of these two?

@negavamas - Cultivation is used as a typical catchall term and is usually found in wuxia, xianxia, and xuanhuan manhua stories. It's normally a primary focus of the story, and is the method in which the characters power-up by achieving higher realms and stages. They are essentially "cultivating" their chi/ki/qigong through meditation and martial arts to get stronger.

Its popularity is similar to isekai in the eastern countries and it's slowly gaining more and more of a following in the west.

Going by the explanation provided here, it sounds like it's dragonball/Z. Which I suppose would be appropriate for OP's profile picture.

It's an odd term to say the least. It's directly under martial arts/ wuxia. Unless there's a more specified meaning, the terms there already define the type of story it is.

Meanwhile, isekai has an actual meaning of "another world", where the character is transported to another one. They can be of any theme, but reincarnation/time travel do not necessarily cover "another world". So isekai as a tag is actually appropriate in tagging a story and not just containment. Lv2 Kara Cheat for example has no reincarnation or time travel, but the MC is just moved from one fantasy world into another.

Like Happily_Grim mentioned it encompasses all of wuxia, xianxia, and xuanhuan.

I think we can honestly delete wuxia and use a more encompassing term like cultivation. And martial arts is cool but it's a lot more general i think.

It's like saying yaoi/yuri is covered by romance, you get me?

Also many works are not marked as either wuxia or even as martial arts. Like some deal with too much fantasy to be marked as any i guess and there is no xuanhuan/xianxia tag.

Also think the term can possibly be extended to few non chinese works i believe. Like if it still updated here volcanic age, and chronicles of heavenly demon followed the same core basis of leveling up to higher realms to achieve greater power.
