That was a clear as a picture as it can be, about Ankei's backstory.

Though setting up for the next chapter I wonder how the conversation between Ankei and Ina will go. Maybe there's still a little more to glean about how Daija "killed" his master considering there was someone else present as well, Jinun, who I don't think was mentioned before? Though it has been awhile.

My bet is on Jinun being responsible for the death of Ankei's mentor and using Daija as a scapegoat.
I don't think Daija is a scapegoat because the other senior monk is also certain Daija ate Ankei's master. Plus, it's Daija. He eats monks. However, I can see Jinun being the reason Daija ate his master, or even actually feeding his master to Daija directly or indirectly.

Its incredible just how immensely complex each character is. There arent any trope characters here, everyone has their own tangible reasons for acting the way they do, which makes each interaction painfully real since you don't know how it should go. Everything is a bit of a grey area, its honestly really impressive. I keep thinking the monk might try and get revenge on daija by killing the snake son and that scares me.

Ugh shit that was awful. And uh maybe this is just me but I get this weird vibe happening between Ankei and Ina, also the fact that Ina (and the other sibling) have such a rapid growth spurt on them... that thing may happen in the future so yeah

As much as Ankei despises Daija, he has enough honor not to take out his hatred on Ina and Tokitaro. This is between him and Daija. Whatever reason Daija had to kill his master, the most obvious being he tried to kill Daija, lost and then got eaten, it makes sense Ankei wants him dead for killing the person who took him under his wing. Though I wonder if Ankei really believes he can kill Daija, or if his drive is suicidal and just wants to provoke Daija to the point that he'll be fed up with him and eat him... Tokitaro's interest in art is fascinating, as well as him being able to power through the differences and trying to act more human. Ina on the other hand seems more the opposite, despite her mostly human appearance she prefers to embrace her animalistic side. I could see some implications of possible attraction towards Ankei...with her rapid snake-like growth spurt, and the fact that snakes reach mating age around 2-4 years that might become a point of contention in the future.

What can be said? A very dark chapter that fleshes out Ankei's troubled background. I can't believe the desire to visit the sea by both Ankei in the flashback and Tokitaro now mentioned in the same chapter was merely by coincidence. It'd be nice if they could travel together there in the future.

I don't believe Ankei's righteous personality would ever tolerate such methods. He clearly doesn't blame anyone else for his master's death besides Daija and has even accepted his children, particularly Ina, since their births. Speaking of which, Ina's more capricious and naive personality as sort of a Daddy's Little Girl who simply equates might with right leaves her in a delicate place right now. I am hopeful that her and Ankei's exchange will challenge each other's worldview and lead to some positive growth for them and not something far more tragic.

These last few chapters have been a real piece of tragic art. Apart from what everyone else has said, one interesting thing i've noticed is how human interaction in these villages changes radically after a major drought or epidemic and how this has affected our characters' stories. Daija went through one and Ankei went through another, but the current village is prosperous; how long will that last? Ankei is the only external element this time and his hatred of Daija may be a key element~:pepehmm:💦
Thks for the translation~

I’ve been wondering for a while now what the mangaka has in store for Ankei and Ina. She’s definitely building something but idk if it’s totally platonic or is she heading for a romantic relationship ?

In any case, all the characters have tragic backstory but Ankei’ past is fucked up.
