"Mansion" is a loanword (garaigo) whose meaning shifted in Japan, where it specifically means "apartment block" or "apartment complex" instead of "manor house". In this case, it was back-translated literally.

Other examples that come up in anime and manga:

• arbaito (Arbeit): In German "Arbeit" is "work" in the general sense: it can be employment, task, assignment, effort, or the physics unit. In Japan as a loanword, it specifically means "part-time job".
• baiku (bike): Specifically means motorbike/moped in Japan, not a bicycle.
• gomu (gom): In Dutch, "gom" is gum, as in resin or sap. In Japanese, it's a rubber eraser or rubber band.
• hanbagu (hamburger): Specifically refers to Salisbury steak/Hamburg steak, and not ground beef or ground beef patty.
• suppatsu (spats): Refers to tights, leggings, or spandex/elastane shorts in Japan, instead of the old-timey fancy shoe coverings/gaiters in the Anglosphere.
• toranpu (trump): Refers to Western-style playing cards; in English, it's a high-ranking or winning card within a card game.

Oddly, gomu has a third meaning in Japanese that's parallel to the way the English slang word "rubber" has evolved. I think this happened independently, but an not 100% on that.
