I can be wordy when I want to make a point, and tend to try to make the same point several times, but I hope it was comprehensible.

Not sure what you’d posted at first, whatevs.

You know what, I deleted my post because I do the exact same thing, and to be perfectly honest I wasn't being nearly as insightful as I thought I was when I made the post, so I didn't want to waste your time, and now I am doing it twice! Very sorry about that.

All I really meant to say was that this style of story (in my opinion) exemplifies attraction based on personality only, and disregarding other aspects such as compatible gender identities, physical preferences, social status, etc etc. It distills attraction into "A likes B exclusively because B is B," which I think souds like an ideal but lacks reality for the vast majority of people.

I don't know if this has any relevance to how it feels to you, and is probably not a new perspective for you, but now that I've committed to wasting your time I hope I've clarified that I'm the one behaving incomprehensibly. 😬

Fair enough. One of them directly addressing confusion about his sexuality is a nice touch.
I read a lot of BL(which is how I’ve come to think of this) and I get sick of “I’m straight, but” stuff.

I totally get your annoyance with the "I'm straight, but" stuff, I think its so common in stories like this one because labels like straight and gay don't nearly properly cover all aspects of attraction between people, and as a result a lot of people get left hanging in regards to both how to convey their attractions and also how to compartmentalize them. Like, I personally considered myself straight until I was like 25 because the vast majority of my preferences lined up with femininity, but when I realized that none of my preferences specifically excluded a gay relationship, I concluded that bisexual would be a closer fitting title. My personal assumption is that many people don't get to that second step, especially if they are in or have had good relationships that can be categorized as straight or gay. Not everyone spends too much time thinking about unclear things they were never taught about, after all.

If these were documentaries, I would agree, but as it's fiction, and largely written by straight women, it's more "love conquers all" thing. It's a big reason the gay male community in Japan has a problem with BL. That and the nearly universal anal sex.

Things are improving, though.

That all makes sense, though I'm curious do you align all of this style of story with BL? I have no experience with that genre as opposed to this one, but I read a lot of genderswap or crossdressing and I previously put all of these types of stories in a different basket with different intent than straightforward BL, written by different kinds of authors and for different audiences, but I've never had any data suggested one way or another before.

@AlterReality because I read a lot of BL and it’s really problematic.

“No homo but fuck me, live-in boyfriend of many years.” I actually saw one where a guy was married to a guy who was no less masculine, but referred to him as his wife and claimed to not be gay.

“My boyfriend is straight” only makes sense as something said by a woman, unless it’s some tragic “fuck any hole that’s available” emotionally detached weird situation, which is ALSO problematic.

I’m currently reading a rarely updated, even in Japanese where that’s happening.

“Has dated women before” = “straight” is so common I can’t tell If that’s actually how it’s seen in Japan, or if it’s just in fiction. I do know that bisexual law are seen as “just experimenting” or “it’s so much easier to date women it’ll never last” and they’re looked down on. I guess that puts it on “might as well be straight”. This is problematic as well, but it’s also beyond my comprehension.

But BL often goes to the level of not even acknowledging that gayness is a thing. “But he’s a guy. This doesn’t make any sense!” Yes it does, dude. U gay.

Gay men in Japan quite often find BL distasteful for these reasons.

Any time BL does a “wait... does this mean I’m... 😟” I cheer out loud. So to see it here, in this weirdness, is great.

Gender swap used to be my thing, but taking into account real issues like gender and body dysphoria they seem drastically unrealistic. If a guy, a legit 100% guy, ended up in a girl body (or the reverse) it would be a nightmare.

Tbh most BL or even gay western comics are highly fantasized... most people that draw such thing never experienced a gay relationship or aren't even gay or LGBT themselves.
They are always shitty fujoshi trying to cash on other fujoshi.

So it's not surprising that gay people in Japan dislike such materials beyond their pornographic use. Tbh most BL that don't rely on the cuteness factor like this one aren't even worth my time...
It will always be the same scenario and the same drama and nothing charming for my eyes.

Nice to see a BL manga where the characters act like normal people instead of
1. An absolute fucking creep
2. Sexual offender
3. Verbal/physical abuser (usually done in a comedic manner)
Like most BL manga

Huh.
Came to the comments to see what exactly this was since it lacks a description, and I wanted to see if it was something I'd enjoy. Glad I looked.

First, I don't think it's for me. Never sure what's what anymore, especially with how often 'trap' is thrown around nowadays. Oh well 🤷‍♂️

Second: I fucking love this community. The discussion going on here epitomizes another reason why.
Aside from the normal stuff found in most any online convos, there is an indepth discussion on gender, sexuality, etc.

👍 To everyone being comfortable with who they are, and liking who and what they like.

This manga has no business being this good. For anyone that isn't sure what to expect (since it lacks a description) just give it a read, even if you aren't fond of shounen ai, this is a really good all-boys high school comedy (ala nichibros, so to speak) mixed with really cute and wholesome romance. Sure, the romance is between boys, but if you are that bothered by it, you probably aren't even reading this comment section in the first place lmao.

I don't really know about gender theory and stuff so I won't touch that subject, but give it a read, trust me.
