Unless this teacher tries to do some matchmaker shit and make Gotou choose the right path (even though the whole stuff with Shigechi should logically be enough) then I don't really see the whole purpose of this character.
Maybe Shigechi was used to make him realise he can't have them all while teach tries to get him to consider each of the 3 (or 4 including Shigechi) now that he has that awareness which will then lead him to Agawa again.
That's a good read of Shigmei's arc, Shigemi would've presumably liked to have been with him, but it was clear to her that Gotou only really loves Agawa; and wouldn't settle for being his silver medal. Again though, I don't think mama sensei's purpose here is to push Gotou in a healthy direction.

Looking back at this particular story arc, in regards to what Shigemi thought of Gotou throughout it, a kind of strange thought came to me about a song that I thought fitting. Strange because of where the song comes from and who it's about, but stripped of that context it felt like it could say what Shigemi wouldn't say aloud.

There's been a lot of that in this chapter so it bothered me.
