Chapter 82

全滅 / zenmetsu / "Annihilation" (or "Wipeout"), what a title. And this being Dark Gathering, there's no way to ignore the gravity it implies.

As per last month's comment, this is like fighting a member of the Replaced who's not a Replaced, what with an evil spirit who has spiritualist knowledge and techniques and outplays Yayoi by sheer experience. It effectively just stealth-killed all of them.
  • Keitaro: Tanden stolen and usurped by the Anti-Spiritualist, his soul ejected
  • Ai: Tanden stolen with her soul still inside, dropped into Eiko
  • Eiko: has two souls inside causing a mental breakdown (based on the pronouns in the raw, the white and black speech bubbles ar Eiko and Ai respectively)
  • Yayoi: soul stricken, incapacitated but Tanden left unextracted?
I know we'll ultimately win, but it's hard for me to imagine this encounter not being a blow to the squad's confidence. They were practically finished by something supposedly low class, and since Yayoi just went through another "helpless" encounter against Risu-tan, this has to at least frustrate her. They might need days of rest or something.


Keitaro at full potential can sense through even concealment techniques huh?

One good thing about this series' monthly pacing is that the more frustrating/infuriating parts can be packaged together like this, so we don't linger on them overlong and can save our energy waiting for the counterattack. Exterminate this pest Warrior!!

Kinkou-shinju / 金光神咒 , what the heck... the Golden Light Mantra is one of the Eight Great Mantra/Incantations of Taoism, and usually depicted as a protection/shield spell that wards off impurities (how ironic). But here, is it instead applying a self-buff?

Salvation​

I'm sorry, but "Buddha" doesn't work for the Warrior's name. I get that 天外救世權現 / tengai-guze-gongen is tricky to put into English, but still. Let me explain:
  1. 天外 / tengai - means "outside/beyond the heavens".
  2. 救世 / guze - "salvation" basically. I would add that since one usually finds salvation by reaching the heavens, "outside the heavens" would then be delivering salvation to those who cannot/fail to reach
  3. 權現 / gongen - Gongen is a type of religious concept that has no proper English equivalent, main reason why I say it's tricky. Closest would be "Incarnation / Avatar" maybe
When Buddhism spread to Japan, there was of course friction with local Shinto beliefs. Then someone came along with the Honji Suijaku theory, positing that certain indigenous Shinto Kami are in fact manifestations/incarnations of certain Buddhist deities, done so they can guide more people to salvation (ie Buddha can make Bunrei that travel to Japan).

(It's basically informal syncretism, trying to merge different religions together for harmony's sake. Enjoyed so-so acceptance)

This concept of a dual entity, of an indivisible whole composed of Buddha and Kami then became known as Gongen. Why Yayoi likened the Warrior to a Gongen, we'll find out when we see his powers in action next month.

My own attempt at a title would be something like "Savior Gongen from Under Heaven" or "Incarnation/Avatar of Deliverance outside Nirvana". Like, how do you get "Gongen" across?


For the Kotodama, 極めて / kiwamete means to "take to the limit", "reach for the peak", "exhaust completely", etc. Given the Warrior's martial prowess and obsession with technique, this is most certainly a command to take his skill to the limit.

So an appropriate command? While wordier ones like "Fight to your limit" would suffice, if more succinct ones include "Polish" or "Hone" or "Prevail" that hearken back to him perfecting his fighting technique. Like this:

"Hone... Avatar of Deliverance below Nirvana"​

In any case, if I must guess, the Warrior is about to cut apart the whole zone, whether he can see the Anti-Spiritualist or not, and bypass all his defensive spells. Maybe he can split itself into multiple copies like a Gongen supposedly can, and safely extract Ai's Tanden without over-harming Eiko? Then Keitaro may guide Eiko to put every piece back into the right place?

Last Words​

Finally, Jump SQ has apparently started an "anomaly" campaign on their official DG website.

Based on this post on Baidu, it appears to be about someone going to the haunts in the story and such. click on the new "Character Bio" after the site refreshes and it'd take you to the special occult website

This is more dire than the Marbas fight at this point. From now on, no more underestimating any spot, no matter the rank. Especially if you got a crafty POS like this thing roaming around. Though, I guess they didn't underestimate it...they had no way to detect him before he struck.

joke aside his name should be "Avatar of Deliverance / Salvation beyond Nirvana"

Everyone, It's not the samurai you all are hoping for.
It's the transcendent Jizou. The Jizou that 7 Jizou spirits are fused together by Yayoi.
Letting out the samurai here without any countermeasures is just asking for death.

EDIT: Bruh, it's the samurai. I misinformed. My bad. I checked the doll and it's the same as when Yayoi retrieved it. Translation jebaited me. I was actually hyped for Transcendent Jizou. :(
