These recent arcs have done a great job adding some depth to Yayoi. It's good to remind the audience that behind her cool, aloof mask, she's still just a kid coping with some huge traumas. She's also so used to solving everything by herself that the polite suggestion that she change her strategy to rely on others more is met with violence. It's straight up childish in a way we never see.

Thanks as always for the translation. This is my favorite manga on the site by far, so I really appreciate it.

Chapter 84

Some notes to start with:

Pg 8 - First, as I noted last month, the quickdraw-speeds the narrator brought up last time are "god-speed" and "retro-speed".

Second, Tai Sui's line here can be better understood as this: his Foresight allows him to catch the timing when Salvation Gongen's Retro-speed Slash lands, but all that does is cancel out the unpredictability factor. The slash itself will still be God-speed so Tai Sui has to be careful to dodge it, especially if it'll keep on coming.

Pg 25 - the scans here missed it, but Yayoi speculates that Tai Sui fighting in such a restrained manner is not only to reduce the burden on Ai's body, but also to limit the damage to Yayoi's forces (since Salvation Gongen is meant to be an ally, not an enemy like with Risu-tan)

Ugh, Imoto-deshi and Ani-deshi used like this hurts. Surely "junior disciple" and "senior disciple" would've worked?

--

So this is how we fix up Ai and Eiko, huh? There goes my hope of reasoning with Salvation Gongen...
  • On one hand, part of me feels like Tai Sui coming out to help Yayoi already means that she failed Aoi's challenge
  • On the other hand, I can't say Tai Sui vs Salvation Gongen wasn't something everyone wanted played out
Even if neither were at full power, it's still cool to see that Tai Sui trying to be considerate of Ai as a vessel, while Gongen was still able to catch him offguard.

Interesting moment, it's easy to miss but Gongen's mask fell as he was fading away. What did Tai Sui see when he beheld his uncovered face?

(Oh, and since it might not've been clear, Tsuzura was using concealment handsigns while he was rescuing Yayoi, which left only Tai Sui visible to aggro Gongen)

--

Back in Ch 79 Aoi did consider having a barrier specialist watch over Yayoi, so it's nice to see it actually transpire. Some in the Chinese fandom had brought up the possibility of them already showing up in this encounter, but I hadn't taken them seriously since I thought it'd be sad if they have to pop up right at the very first haunt of this round...

But Tsuzura's got a good head on his shoulders, and it's good that someone in-story is voicing how the group's hitting their limits. Sounds like he mainly specs into defence though, not particularly strong on offence.

Keitaro might've finally got his motivation to go down the spiritualist skill tree.

Lastly, this chapter came with an interview with the anime's Character Designer/Chief Animation Director Ichinose Yuri. One of the questions is about which character was the toughest one for his job, and their answer was Shuten Douji with his sense of style.

I highlight this because if he's talking about bringing Shuten Douji to life, this pretty much confirms that Season 2 will be 2 cours for the complete Kyoto Arc experience!

EDIT: Link to interview here

This kinda reminda me of the Madara vs Might Guy fight. The God tries to fight the absolute best specialist in throwing hands and get his ass nearly kicked in😂

Much as i love Yayoi, that boy was right. She needs to wake up to the reality that situations like this when she conpletely lost control of will happen again. And that backup plan sounds so flimsy i dont think i would have worked

Also our boi Taisai is turning into a tsundere😂

Didn't think she would/could fly off the handle like that? But great chapter as always.
Yes, it's always interesting to see how the exorcists always manage to elicit an emotional response out of her in some way. It reminds us that despite Yayoi's accomplishments and the powerful spirits that she commands, beneath that stoic demeanor she is still just a regular kid. Also this is just me speculating, but she probably realized that she's way out of her depth when it comes to proper exorcism knowledge and techniques, so she ends up acting cold or hostile towards them in response.

Finally, a tank joins the party. And it is a defensive tank that doesn't attack. Good, the party can still experience all the horrors of ghosts; now with some more layers of protection. Looks like his personality is one of those gruff softies or some might call yankee/delinquent chunnibyou.

EDIT: Bruh, that metal katashiro appeared out of nowhere. I looked back at the previous chapters and I do not see yayoi making the katashiro at all. Also, I highly doubt Gongen, who pushed Taizai Ai in jutsu protection mode until her feet sank into the ground and still cut her arm, will have any trouble cutting through that metal katashiro in one strike.

I guess this will be Yayoi's character growth arc. She's being one girl army for so long for the team... A good wake up call for Keitaro and others too.

Damn, a berserker that possess transcendent skill and enough mind to use it is scary lol
Mad enhancement Rank C or lower Berserker probably :v
