Judging by context clues, most of their civilization centers around towns and big cities because it is protected by anti-monster barrier. It seems most if not a lot of their populations are crammed into fantasy medieval cities. With only resources collectors escorted by trained fighters/adventurers, most civvies are probably spending time stuck inside the cities and behind walls.
Being cooped up for god knows how long would drive the population into a high functional but stark raving society.
