Just sayin' -- do consider the consequence of making a financial benefit from prisoners. It allows for corrupted officials to intentionally imprison people, or "radicalize" punishments for any sort of crimes, so they can get a cheap workforce.
In theory, using criminals as a workforce to "at least be useful to society somehow" sounds sensible, but it's as dystopian as it gets. If you need free labor in your society, it's already shit. It gets a bit worse than just selling your children, which truly does amaze me that even happened.

I do agree that the flags are being raised for mc getting dat slave, but I feel like you are reading way too much into it. Mc seems against slavery to me (but Lawful enough to not do anything about it), and the author definitely seems to be against it (did you note how he painted a really grim picture of how expanding frontier towns considers slaves a one-time purchase and uses up slaves to such an extent that the village is considered as having a thriving slave-market? It is obvious there is a really dark picture being secretly painted here.

I think you're reading too deeply into this, yourself. A car could be a "one time purchase" too, rather than a rental or a lease or anything, but there's still maintenance and fuel even if you did have everything on hand to just buy it outright. Another good example would be houses vs apartments. You could totally have a one time purchase situation with your living space, the bills and taxes and all that aren't part of that transaction itself, the "purchase" in question.

That aside, her tone and mannerisms as shown during the conversation don't exactly look like somebody discussing the dark and grim side of a situation they themselves are in.
