So, I think this month's lesson for me to learn is to push even when there's no fuel in the engine. Well actually, I do have fuel, I just got my wisdom teeth pulled, and am in the salt water phase of recovery. And I'm getting more sleep than I usually do. The funny thing about inspiration is I can't control when it hits. I watch Tarantino films and one of my oldest stories finally reignites again. But, this is one of those times I have to write something, anything, even if it's not up to snuff.
SO! As the title states, we have two projects, both are being pursued currently. the latter in a Pre-Production Phase, the former has two chapters written which are gigantic. Here's what they are:
DEPRESSING SCI-FI: Project "Centuries" [Working Title]:
1. Chapter 1- Sweet Dreams: Focuses upon a Young Woman and her friends and hired allies as they explore a broken world for the source of it's destruction. But, as they delve deeper, paranoia and betrayal leaves them far from base in drastically dire straits. The Plot is slow, sort of like a play in it's beginning: primarily focused on dialogue, building up the characters, world, and objective and paranoia. While the final 3 subchapters see the climax where the traitors show face, and hidden events are revealed and friends die. In the End our Young Star is left alone, wounded, all her friends dead around her. She crawls her way out to the surface of the broken world, and with one of her dead friend's on her lap the chapter closes with her staring out to space as the sky clears.
2. Chapter 2- Shine On You Crazy Diamond: Immediately following the events of chapter 1, This chapter follows the young woman at first as she learns more about the source of the destruction, a bizarre tiny creature which is oddly docile. As well she navigates the Imperial Palace she is now in, having been saved by the Local Big Empire of the Sci-Fi Story. Afterwards we get to meet her Father who along with the caretaker of the family get vengeance on the man who hired the traitors who attacked our protagonist. Later we meet the mother who is torn between vengeance and also feeling undeserving of pursuing so for her daughter who she's hardly seen. Then the parents meet, then we meet the brother, the parents and brother meet. And lastly we get back to our Protagonist who is told of the global consequences of the previous chapter and serious foreshadowing sets in as she reunites with family.
OVERALL: Chapter 1 serves as a giant mood-setter, the themes establishing the ongoing themes and mood of the rest of the larger story. Chapter 2 is the proper beginning to the longer narrative. Once more we see our protagonist set out with a larger group of allies. And with Chapter 1 in mind, we know this larger group: her family will likely face death by story's end. The Story is depressing in my eyes because it has no positive meaning to it. I usually write hopeful things, but to put the whole story simply, it is the story of a Girl pressured, abused, and tortured into killing the one creature no one else wanted to. And that thing she killed, a monster itself never wanted to be so, and wanted death to be free. It's a really depressing exploration, one of those plots you kinda question whether you want to see out there. But, this story has been calling to me for a bit. Fate is something many struggle with, a story about Destiny's Weight may be what some are looking for.
DARK FANTASY: Project "Norsan" [Working Title]:
When Up and Coming Thief "Anne" witnesses the siege and capture of Castle Fang by the Elves of White-Wood and Count Cyr. Anne is kidnapped and taken to Princess Laurentina Dowen who offers her a vast treasury in exchange for gathering old family friends and the strangest ensemble of adventurers to defend her amidst the coming Coup. Anne leaves with haste as all around her forces begin to move against Laurentina and more importantly her promised fortune!
OVERALL: The story will flip-flop on foci. We've got a wide cast of protagonists, but at Heart will be Anne and Laurentina. In the end the full story will see the ensemble, Anne, and Laurentina weather the coup and attempt to keep the Empire afloat until another coup comes, they're ousted and forced beyond the sea to gather foreign aid. In comparison to Centuries, this story is a lot lighter, baring humor and adventure, though it'll delve into dark territory undoubtedly.
Production wise, Centuries is furthest along, but hit a snag. Chapter 1 and 2 are huge. 1 being 60 pages, 2 being 80. the Size was intentional as later on I'll divvy the chapters up into subchapters again and redo the subchapters as proper chapters. The idea is to get a "Movie" Idea of it, then later expand it. Chapter 3 takes all the build up of set-up heavy chapter 2 and execute. It'll be much longer was the first 20-30 pages will be dedicated to having the entire family interact, as the next 60 will be the execution of the setup.
Norsan on the other hand is taking a bit longer. I'm waiting for that inspirational kick, but as can be told I want to push ahead and at least right an "idea" of what I want to get things moving. So far I've been ironing out lore. When it comes to Fantasy I extensively work on setting up histories and magic, mythology and geopolitics. Nevertheless, taking off and writing usually shapes the lore or reshapes it if it's already there anyway.
SO Which one? I'm going to work on them both, I love them both, but which one should I push, I'm really at a loss at the moment. Centuries is my dream project, but I say that about any project I take off with for a time. It just feels wrong not writing anything. Sure, I'm working on my Bachelors, recovering from Wisdom Teeth stuff, But I've written through worse! Has to be one or the other!
