Yeah I can only conclude 8.5 is more of a what-if scenario and not canon because there's no way he put back a button down shirt and that tie just to go back to bed to sleep.

I can imagine a scenario like, "I need to go back home", starts dressing, "ah actually I'm a bit tired. Maybe I can sit on the bed a moment", falls asleep two minutes later. But even then, nobody puts on the tie at three in the morning with the aim of just walking back home.
