Amon is such a nice dude. I know he had to 100% have a dark ass background for him to be like this.

He's from the country that was able to turn his warming seal he invented to make sure the rest of the people he knew wouldn't freeze to death into a bomb.
Hell, he probably thinks his brother died, so he continues living and struggling to honor his memory.
You don't need to invent a dark past for him. It's already there.

They're not necessarily supposed to be fairies. Looking at the raw, the term used is 妖精 (yousei) which is both fairy and elf. While it is more common to use エルフ (erufu) when referring to elves, the kanji may be used as well.
I personally believe they are a fairy race because of the difference in ears between Rain and Marill's family. And also the fact that Marill has wings on her feet. Then there is also the foreshadowing in chapter 21 with Lienna talking about faries.

I'm not saying that she's not a fairy. Rather I'm just pointing out the term used is a more broad one which may not be very specific for her nor her parents and doesn't rule the mother out despite her different stature. Neither of them resemble Lienna's imagined fairy either for that matter and, if we consider Lienna's imagination grounded in the setting's reality, that indicates at least three clearly physically distinct categories of "fairy".
