interesting turn.
From the very first panel that the first commander (and the 5th, 7th, and 13th) is shown, you can see she's a woman (with a very noticeable chest too if everything else about how she's drawn didn't clue you in), plus our protagonist has literally met her when she was young, what's with the constant 'they'?they

Dude, it's a 700+ year old usage of a singular pronoun. Genderless. It'd be weird to mind it.From the very first panel that the first commander (and the 5th, 7th, and 13th) is shown, you can see she's a woman (with a very noticeable chest too if everything else about how she's drawn didn't clue you in), plus our protagonist has literally met her when she was young, what's with the constant 'they'?
There is no lack of respect in just referring to her as such. Singular they appeared in Shakespearean plays and such works, but it was never common verbiage used by everyday people to refer to a single known (<- important) person. For ambiguous cases, like a hooded figure whose identity is unknown, it's fine and even good to use. When that's not the case like here, it reads poorly with no upside.[appeal to triviality]
[actual argument about respect]
