Beyond the little teases we've seen before, we still don't know exactly what happened between Carl and Aria other than her decimating his team nor the exact promise he made to her. What we've seen is that back in the fight the duke, it showed Aria as a mother with a son(presumably the first Rainford) and that she bestowed a blessing onto that child to protect him. But because Aria herself is one of the Shadows, that blessing most likely is too powerful for humans to handle and thus it became a curse that affected male Rainfords in the form of "eternal protection"


And that "protection" is something Aria seems either unwilling or unable to break, especially with Akira who looks to be the most important person to Aria next to her "original son"

I think its just translation being a little weird. He asked Aria to break the "protection" she has over the Rainford family and to do it as a favor presumably because they've known each other for so long, not to break it just for him only.
