I do want to point out that the dinner roll was from the mess deck, and afaik they've never been served soft.Hmm... You might actually have a point with the crust. For me, as a person from a heavy bread culture country, the crust doesn't really play a part in a bread being considered tough or not. Rye bread can have a really hard crust, though. Those disposable plastic knives are an abomination that can barely cut boiled broccoli, so a rye bread crust could be challenging. For an East Asian used to eating mainly rice, the crust of rye bread might seem unimaginable. It's not a challenge for healthy teeth, though. I know old folks with compromised teeth/jaws don't sometimes like it.
The mess deck had at one point, only put out maple syrup and rice for breakfast.
As well as soap bubble spaghetti sauce.
The food was in fact so bad that my father who was born during WW2 and grew up post reconstruction during which he had to scrounge for food, tried it and asked me how could I eat the food served. I told him they made it better than usual for the guests.
Anyway the princess certainly expected it to be soft, or at least break through the crust but hence said reaction.
Or we were meant to handwave it as "military rations suck" since the team is Korean and would've had done military service for the RoK.
