Prior to the development of the Haber-Bosch process, bird guano was the go-to source for the nitrogen used in fertilizers and explosives, and could be sourced in huge quantities from islands that had served as seabird nesting sites.

While it could be based on a specific island like Nauru, there's no reason it has to be.

I would've assumed Admiral Yamaguchi was aware of Haber-Bosch, but I guess he either doesn't remember the chemistry or figures a mining operation would be easier to scale up (no particularly skilled labor required).

The big battle against the unified races and the demon king happened, the dudes lost and shimazu dude and the dwarves did a rear guard suicide attack, then the ww2 ace saved him (i think) and they ended up with the ww2 admiral
