I think both of them assume that other is forced to be with them, because of the kittens. They didnt have a choice to be together, they were forced. Its almost plausible that neither of them ever spoke about their feelings towards each other. Or at least not in a serious manner.

Yup they're a couple of idiots who had a one night stand and got pregnant. They seem never to truly express their feelings to each other and both seem to believe their marriage is failing and they stay together for the kittens when in reality they clearly love each other.
