Yeah, the plan is so unnecessary. The empress returning with the horses automatically made the lord pay constant attention to her. One might say this forced the lord to divide his forces between guarding Mion and the horses, but come on. This merely means there are multiple people who might get in trouble, instead of just one. Those ordinary soldiers are not opponents at all for Blum. He's no sneaking thief, but if the lord hadn't put his estate on high alert after the empress returned, Blum could have probably got pretty far without fighting anyone. I bet that trap wouldn't have existed either. Last, but not least, since they returned the horses, they need to steal them back for transportation. If they had never returned them, Blum could have merely run with the princess to some barn a few miles away, where the horses for escape had been waiting all along.

This whole plan did little but create extra trouble. It's not too big trouble since the lord has talent for absolutely nothing but making money, but it still created more chances for something to go wrong.
