With each chapter the plan just got more and more unnecessarily cumbersome. What was the point of keeping the carriage in front of the mansion, drawing attention and the attacks of numerous soldiers? They were rescuing the princess, famous for being strong, just like her mom. She could have run for a while, leaving the mansion. Even if the empress went through the totally unnecessary action of returning in public, she could have still, at least, taken the carriage to a pre-determined hidden place, waiting for Blum and Mion in peace, ready to go at a moment's notice. The tiny mage had no business being there in the first place. Mion being as smart as she is, she noticed from the few words Blum uttered that he's with Al. There was no need for the squirt to be there to vouch for him. The empress would have known all this beforehand.
