Speaking of, they said the gifts people have were from the goddess so who gives the monsters their gifts?
An opposing god? So even if he is human, he might have a gift from that "evil" god trying to destroy the world.

One of the smarter fantasy protags I've seen in a while. (Keep in mind most of the media I consume is isekai or isekai esque.) He knows that fighting the dark smaith wouldn't be good, he knows that the dark smith has info they don't, and so he takes the best course of action, indirect probing. Honestly, that probably what I would do as well if I were in that situation.
