That is because he obviously brainwashed you with mind control type magic. Probably a charm. Hopefully he didn’t also rape you because anything sexual under those conditions would be considered rape
@GodGinrai : someone started translating it, only prologue and chapter 1 dones so far.
@feha : He knows he has the charm power. I think it only works on women though. This is not The Vengeful White Cat Lounging on the Dragon King's Lap where there is an excuse for not finding out about his magic (coming from an extremely low magic world). though he might have figured she could not do anything to him, and after 2 years of putting her down and abusing her he might have started to forget how useful and valuable her skills and knowledge really are. He is way to arrogant anyway, in ch 1 they use a mountain trip she can not make to separate from her, someone translated that part of the LN (the separation is the prologue) and she had an EXTREMELY good reason for not wanting to take that trip
It was the very worst time of year to take that route, which is not the safest route there in the first place. The monsters on the mountain are actively hunting for food to eat over the winter, and love human flesh, so they will actively track down and attack in large groups, well beyond what the party could handle. The trip was almost 100% suicide. from the "Hero" P.o.V. chapters that are on the novel raw site and not paywalled
They only survived by a fluke, but still got overwhelmed and lost to the monsters in their first encounter and got captured, They managed to escape by luck, after about a week. (The monsters capture and imprison their food to keep it fresh)
@Mogima : Self-proclaimed hero party. He is a narcissist who is trying to raise his rank to achieve an easy life.
I'm actually surprised she's already suspicious about why she stayed with that party. Other mangas delay this waaaayyy too long or just forget about it and MC suddenly remembers to move the plot.
@sjmcc13 you entirely ignored my argument about why he cant know of his charm power: mc is still alive. If he knew of it he would obviously have killed her to avoid loose ends outing him.
Looking at the raws for chapter six, the way he uses the charm on her again sure LOOKS like he knows exactly what he's doing. Its pretty obvious he knows.
@feha hmm I think it's pretty clear that he knowingly uses his charm ability on her. when the 'charming' takes place, his facial expressions look very sly and scheming as he talks to her...
I believe it's something he can control. which would mean that not all of his party members would be under the effect of it. they would only be under the effect of it if he needs them to be. I doubt that carol would've happily went along with his team without reason, thus he would've needed to 'charm' her to make her follow without question. also, I think that he let her go unscathed cause he never considered that it could wear off or the consequences of it (all in all, he doesn't seem very smart). he probably assumed she would just go on with life not questioning the validity of her feelings for him... which is exactly what she had been doing until recently.
@feha : Your theory is fundamentally flawed, but actually I did, your reason for why he must not is laughable because you are missing any justification for why such an action would be NECESSARY, when there is so much that says it is not.
though he might have figured she could not do anything to him, and after 2 years of putting her down and abusing her he might have started to forget how useful and valuable her skills and knowledge really are.
Those are specifically reasons (and not all the ones I could think up on the top of my head) for him to not fear reprisal, or feel the NEED to kill her. I even if she did break, the odds that someone would even listen to her after from their perspective effectively being a groupie and maid for 2 years is so small it is not funny.
It also depends on how the magic wears off, would it be a suddenly snapping back to reality, will it slowly fade over time, or could there ven be some permanent effects. The chapters so far indicate a slow fading, which would have a high chance of never realizing she was charmed, otherwise he would have had a price on his head by a former victim from before meeting her.
Heck it is only because she ran into Kaido that she is having any recovery. Look at what she was doing before she met him, barely making anything getting ripped of by merchants, being at rock bottom and likely having no or a bad reputation in the guild. Heck the party requests seemed to all be D-Rank or above, so E-rank after 2 years is very unlikely to find a respectable group (especially considering Kaido's comments about the general quality of low tier adventurers in ch 2)
As well, even if she did do something there would need to be a reason he can not just charm his way out of it.
Simply put the odds of her being able to do anything to him (from his perspective), when she has 2 years of no accomplishments and the lowest rank, plus he was leaving the country are so low is is not even funny. She has to make a recovery that is very unlikely because of all the self worth issues he has installed in her over 2 years, make achievements that mean she would not be ignored. Realize she was under a charm, and not just in love with a huge jerk. As well he would need to fail after dumping her. As if he is as successful or more after losing her he can just point to his accomplishments and say she is lying, and everyone would believe that. He obviously thinks he will be more successful and does not need her, or he would not be ditching her in the first place.
Deciding he needs to kill her requires a level of intelligence and competence that quite frankly the previous chapters flashbacks all indicate he quite simply does not have. Plus some of the flashback interactions do not really work unless he knows about the charm, like the one where he re-applies it.
As well, there are potential downsides to killing a party member, or a civilian. Would there be any red flags if she suddenly disappeared? Does the guild or guard run any kind of check that could detect the murder? (In Kamitachi ni Hirowareta Otoko on of the recently translated light novel chapters mentions that in that world there are magic items that can detect guilt of up some crimes, but not all crimes), Does he feel he does not want to kill a woman? etc.
Also :
There are non-paywalled WN chapters from his point of view, they explicitly state he knows about the charm magic. They went to her village, and faked the monster attack, so they could recruit her because they were failing as adventurers and heard rumors about her OP potions. to him she was not a person but a tool to be discarded, and he was to arrogant and self centered to see how things could and would fail
Man... All I need to know right now, is that her family's shop that she wanted to protect is still there. What if it's sold? Destroyed? What if the village was taken out? The hero will be responsible for a whole lot more than mind rape if that is the case.
"You can't. You'll have to examine injured people, right? The people in there are definitely in an unstable condition after they've been attacked by the monster. If you, as a healer, go there then you'll only raise their hopes. Will you be able to carry that responsibility alone?"
What the hell kinda argument is that? What's the point of healers if they don't treat people? Is he saying the world is better without doctors? That if you fail to save someone, what, you have to pay recompense? This "carry responsibility" argument is stupid every time I see it, and I see it way too much in anime and manga.
@kyto1984 , right? imagine saying that to an paramedic, like, you can't perform first aid and take these people to a hospital, they might think that they'll survive, like, thats the point? of helping them?
Deep breaths. deep breaths me. in. out. in. out. Since i know what's going to happen in like 2 more chapters, i should just savor this feeling now. Phew
Many thanks
@Kyto1984
It's like doing surgery in an emergency room, if something happens you are the one recognized as responsible from the victims families eyes (not all the time but you will definitely feel like you were responsible). In this case, she has a limited amount of health potions so she isn't sure if she has enough to heal them all, she even diluted it with water just to have enough. I don't think she still knows how potent her potions are cause of her old party.
Thank you for the translation!! @unime ugh, I just saw the pictures of the next 2 chapters, and didn't understand a single word, but... I don't often feel for a character, but I really would like to torment Gran and his band. (The killing would be too light.)
Kaido, I like him now, and there should be a huge bad deed from his side for me to not like him.
Slowly but surely, the veil is being lifted and she's realizing what assholes that old party was. Still hoping she consults Kaido and he outright explains to her that it's some kind of charm magic.
Clearly, she's extremely competent as a healer. She totally deserves a higher rank than E. I wonder if this quest is going to help fix that?
Actually, what I really wanna see is for her to encounter the "hero" again and not fall for his bullshit a second time because she's built up her self-confidence.
