Edit Button Suddenly Disappeared

I've been able to edit series for several years now. Mostly, I add images, links, and other missing information while also making basic corrections (such as the wrong author or basic typos/grammartical errors). However, today, not long after I did a bunch of edits, the edit button disappeared.

I don't think I did anything to have my edit permission revoked. Everything I did today was as always.

The only possiblity I can think of, is that when I tried to fix three titles (two weren't in proper title case and one had an adjusted apostrophe), for some bizare reason, the system decided I had added suspect characters to the titles. Never knew that a capital "I" or " ' " could be considered suspect.

What's going on? Is there any possibility I can get my edit permissions back?

Hey there, this might be partly my fault as i was trying to reach out to you or asking people if they know your discord handle to ask you about the amount of titles you add without subtitles, which are unnecessary with the search on MD and MU (if added as title - subtitle).

I just wanted a friendly chat but it seems one of the staff revoked your perms prematurely without giving a message, which is not the right way to go about or my intention!

Are you able to hop on the MangaDex discord and join us in the Contributors channel?

I can't use discord since it doesn't have any backwards compatibility.

As for the titles, I always make sure both the shorter title and the full title are present. Is that a problem? (If so, I'll stop doing that.)

But yea recently (or well for nearly a year) we are trying to clean up a lot of titles, including correcting romanization.
The search is well advanced enough that people can find a title using only "title" when the database contains "title: subtitle" so there is no need to actually bloat the titles with subtitle less titles anymore. same for any other special markers or space, not ever combination should be add anymore, search can most likely find them anyway.

For MangaUpdates, it is a bit tricky as it cannot handle colons vs hyphens properly (unlike MangaDex) so this is why you would see "title: subtitle" as main title, and as alternative "title - subtitle" this way search can properly match "title" with "title - subtitle" due to the space.

Similarly you will see often a space or (preferably) a fullwidth space added between the native title and subtitle "３度目の皇女は孤児院で花開く　～やり直し皇女ですが、正体を隠していたのになぜか殿下に気に入られました～" so the same thing occurs for native titles. (we generally do this also MD and MangaBaka as it adds visual clarity on subtitle, even when the subtitle lacks ~ or - as markers).

the only actual alternative titles we would need are "wo" titles (we prefer "o" as primary with the current style) and alternative readings (like non-furigana) of kanji as alternative titles.

Ill check in with the a staff member to see if they can reinstate the edit ability, I just wanted to point this out in a conversation, to check if you did it with a reason or were not aware of any (recent) style changes and cleanup, so sorry about that.

Yeah, I wasn't aware of any of that. (All such anouncements are discord, I guess. Or I managed to miss it somehow.)

Personally, I've always found those ultra long titles (the ones which make the full title of Katers Murr look short) visually confusing and people mostly use the primary titles anyway. But maybe that's my dislexia?

Eitherway, since I am now aware that the policy has changed, I'll act accordingly.

As for discord, I do have an account. Thing is, I only have one device capable of connecting to the internet without any problems: an eleven-year-old laptop. The issue is that since discord automatically updates to the latest version, my computer hasn't been able to run the application for over a year now. As far as I could find, there's no way to disable the updates.

But yea generally we have some discussions about certain romanizations in Discord and the romanization style is still a WIP over at MangaBaka as well. But honestly, they are generally comparable with other sources so not too much different, only wasaeigo romanization(like we prefer Gyaru now as main title, and Gal in alternative) and some capitalization differences.

Understandable, but to be accurate in the metadata, the full title is the actual title and then any shortened titles (not actual short titles like DanMachi or SAO) look like bloat in the system.

And with the recent user preferences users can now decided what title they want to see first and foremost, and which as secondary title. This is now possible due to the massive cleanup, and that the primary main title now has a language assosiated with it.

And not every romanisation but Manga-Baka's one! They're going to kill you if you use "wo" instead of "o" in a Japanese title (for を)!

Honestly o vs wo is the least of my consern in the romanization, but yes we strongly prefer 'o' as main romanization, but can always add the 'wo' variant as alternative title! There are still some out there that use ~subtitle~ or -subtlte- (trying to mimic the native subtitle markers) instead of using title: subtitle for the romanization, those do annoy me or those using kana reading of identifiable (non-clipped) loanwords...

When it comes to romanization, I honestly put any and all applicable ones I can find.
(Minus ones with obvious errors, such as using East Asian punctuation symbols or — like Oakminati mentioned — using a kana-reading/hangul-approximation or incorrect form of identifiable, unaltered foreign words.)

For always putting a romanization as the primary title, when reading that huge mass of text, I must have skipped over that part of the style guide somehow (it is long). I fixed what I could remember I submitted/edited (assuming they hadn't been fixed already). Going forward, I'll be more careful.

As for the Japanese, I'm reasonably certain I haven't submitted or edited any series with multiple [Japanese] romanizations since I got my editing permissions back. (If I have put the wrong ones first since, it's probably because my mind auto-corrected "wo" to "o".) As for providing a romanization myself, that requires good knowledge of Japanese. And, the thing is, I don't know any East Asian languages, so I am (for the most part) at the mercy of other people's work on that one.
