I disagree. She may be a former hero party member, but she's a child. If you're physically weaker and slower, it limits your options. It has already been established in the previous chapters that she wasn't blessed with any strength or particular talent with the sword nor that she is an incredible fighter in her current state. All things considered, she has been doing very well in this fight.

Additionally, she was an assassin, who would win through the element of surprise and lethal attacks. She was also in a party, which means that she had her comrade's backs and vice versa. (Although I can't quite recall the earlier chapters, so I'm hazy on the details.)

In short, I personally don't think she's pathetic and don't mind seeing her grow stronger without a ridiculous advantage compared to her peers. (Her experience still shows in the way she evaluates her opponent and manages to drag on a fight that most children her age would have lost in a few actions.)

i think people are so used to the power fantasy trope that they get annoyed/bored with fights where the MC can't ROFLSTOMP everyone they fight...

Michelle is stupid, but she isn't a trained fighter, has no combat experience or event parents who can impart appropriate knowledge to her. One one hand she should be commended for her bravery, on the other hand she is stupidly stubborn. So yea it makes sense she doesn't know how to fight, look for openings, etc. All she's ever shot at are wooden boards and some birds...
