I think some bones like that of chicken's are okay. Avian bones are crumbly after all (I eat them regularly).
It's usually the large bones you have to avoid feeding dogs with.

What I've heard is the opposite, since avian bones splinter easily (and canines don't really have molars to grind them) whereas heavier bones tend to get chewed down. Though, bones in general don't seem to be the best choice for dogs either way.
