I relate to this so much. Back when I was in middle school, I thought spiders were really cool (I still do). Jumping spiders, baboon spiders, huntsman spiders, I was just really interested in them. Not just spiders, all kinds of bugs and insects in general. I even wanted to be an entomologist when I grew up.

But of course the other kids in my school found out about it, and that was when I first discovered just how unbelievably cruel kids could really be. They would go out of their way to capture insects (whatever they could find) just to kill them right in front of me. They'd tear them apart or throw them down on the ground and stomp on them before I could do anything. They thought the way I got upset and tried to stop them was absolutely hilarious, and the teachers were no help at all. "They're just bugs, get over it," was the gist of what they had to say.

At the time I lacked the vocabulary to properly explain what was so disturbing about the whole thing, that my fellow students would go to such lengths for no other reason than to hurt me, because they thought it was "funny". That my sadness and frustration was no more than an amusement to them. It's something that still bothers me to this day. The joy they found in killing something I loved.

Several years later we read "Lord of the Flies" in class. Some of the other students thought it was unrealistic that a bunch of kids would just go savage and try to kill each other, but I didn't think so. To me it made perfect sense. I had seen it, after all. Maybe not something as extreme as murder, but that animalistic glee that's just barely hidden away beneath the surface, desperately trying to break free and lash out.

And why?

I don't know. Because it's "funny", I guess.

Not gonna lie, the little runt had it coming.

Definitely, kids can be very cruel when they find something entertaining. I know from personal experience too.
