Does the saint truly only become the new witch when she personally kills the witch? Isn't it possible the real, current saint becomes the new witch even if she's a thousand kilometers away from the scene where the old witch is killed? That would make Elrise's simple solution ineffective.
I believe that Elrise is basing this belief on one of the routes in the game. One where Vernel kills the witch -- in that case, the miasma goes into Vernel (and kills him) instead of into Eterna. This is something that is mentioned at the beginning of the LN. Not sure if the manga mentioned it.

She can probably make up a new reason, like 'the truth' behind the curse that was lost in time, beyond even those who know about the whole saint->witch thing.

After all the first saintess who became witch probably didn't defeat another witch-saintess.
Not giving details, but this sort of thing will be explored in the future. Keep theorizing and speculating about stuff like this and you should have fun when we start getting answers.

If memory serves correctly, the mechanism that makes the saint/witch is inevitable. It might be a bit different than usual if that scenario occurred, but long term there wouldn't be any changes and the cycle continues.

Though whether it would even be possible for the witch to die by anyone but the saints hands is questionable.

The history and origins of the saint/witches is very varied and will be explored eventually.

But let's just say Elrise understands most of the mechanics and has a reasonable plan based on her superior game knowledge.

Novel spoiler
Some inaccuracies since I read it a long time ago

Anyway, it's long so beware for word spam.
The 1st witch is a thing made by the world to balance it when some stupid civilization create a weapon that can nuke the whole planet.

The 1st witch success at destroying the dangerous civilization, but

since the world is stupid, it made a design flaw.

Ugh, this need a long explanation that related to Elrise, but trying to summarize it...

the magic on this world come from concentrated emotion of the people pemerating the air.

but the strongest emotion people have are MOSTLY the negative feeling, so...

When the 1st witch super buff herself with magic (alike to how Elrise do now), she is overwhelmed by the negative emotion of the people. She slowly become crazy because of it.

And since the world is stupid, instead of realizing it design flaw it decided to appoint the 1st witch's child for the next Balance method.

Aka the Saint.

And long story short, becayse the world force her, the child destroy her mother.

And her crazed mother almost killed her child.

But in the moment of clarity, she save her child and seal her away instead.

AND THEN because the world lost it 2nd balancer (1st saint), again, instead of working on fixing it design flaw, IT CREATES ANOTHER BALANCER (saint).

By this point the 1st witch already lost her soul and just a floating bunch of negative emotion. It parasitize the saints because it's instictually want to keep existing and the saints have similar property as them.

Btw, Elrise method of getting stronger is actually the same as the 1st witch, but she doesn't become crazy because...
....it's explained her heart is too black to care about negative emotion and actually thrives on it.
She actually get hurt when she absorb good emotion

yeah, positive emotion are actually as much as magic source as negative emotion. That's why I said Mostly at the beginning.

Also, it's implied the reason OG!Elrise is that much of a villain is because she have the same affliction as the witch, and she is also overwhelmed by the negative emotion.

Leila better not become Dias 2.0 especially when all Elrise has to do is tell her that she's a fake saint.
If she follow Dias footsteps, she probably be okay whit MC being a fake as long she stays the same.

Hopefully.

Looks like Elrise has two jobs to do now. End the cycle and cure the previous saint who is now the witch!

If she's fake, why couldn't she get injured during the kidnapping incident? Is she part of the witch?
It's probably something like, the saint & the witch have "damage nullification" skill that can only be bypassed by each other's attack.
Elrise on the other hand, has 9999 Def.
