It's interesting how the satisfaction of the reader's curiosity often necessarily comes at the direct cost of the protagonist's health. Here we see the opposite trade made: the protagonist chooses not to learn what's going on, and in so doing preserves themselves. We as readers must decide whether this trade-off is in our favor, whether the protagonist has enough pathos that we feel good about them being kept alive and healthy, at the expense of a satisfying catharsis
