I seem to recall a study that suggested most animals can only count to like, four. And there are actually human cultures that never developed some concepts like numbers, and trying to explain it to them is...hard. Their brains just simply aren't wired for this sort of thing.
That said, the troll has 3 kids, so it should be able to notice there's one more if it can count to four.

At one point, Makoto was sitting on a giant leaf. While traditionally a broom, couldn't she just use that leaf to fly out of the cave? Just grab the stem and pretend it's a broom, or even imagine it as a flying carpet. She is a black witch after all, with a talent for the creation of magic. Something like this should be easy for her with a spell she is already familiar with. The Flying Witch who doesn't think to fly out of danger.
