The Canadian train and The Ghan in Australia are both long like that.
The Trans-African Railway doesn't actually exist yet, it's a proposed project that will go from East coast of Africa to the West. Author was probably inspired by the Orient Express, which existed, it had a detective mystery book written about it by Agatha Christie
