Actually, in the Beautiful World chapter, that seems to be inspired by the Hong Kong film The Eye, which later got an American remake. The main character got an eye surgery (they were originally blind) and after that they started seeing ghosts. That explains why Fran's dog-human friend is shocked and seemed to recognize the girl's portrait (I assume from e.g. a news report of someone who died). The only thing that doesn't fit perfectly is that the monsters he sees are solid, so that they were probably not ghosts.
