My guess is Anna's mom and Grace's mom swapped places similar to how it's described in the play many years ago (before they were married). Grace's dad knows about this and that the 'noble' he married is really the commoner childhood friend of his (or something like that). That's why he knows Anna's mom and why Anna's mom is comfortable around nobles.

So Grace's mom really is her mom, but she was a commoner before she became a noble and later gave birth to Grace.

There's probably more faerie magic since then that brought a 50+ year old dude over to Grace's body. I think something related to this later magic is why Grace can't see her mom, not due to the original switch.

I think this is a bad way of thinking about things. I absolutistly think all scanlation of paid material is immoral, but if you're thinking about it from a more consequentialist perspective that values accurate translation, then the reason to not care about Orange's official translation is not that they're using AI, but because their “translation” is bad. Their title is bad. Their typesetting is bad. Their proofreading is bad. They are not offering a good translation. That is almost certainly in part because they're using AI, but that is not the proximate reason you should use to justify this. Because eventually AI will be good.

I agree, primarily because Orange aren't only using AI, they use proper translators as proofreaders. Doing it this way lighten the workload per translator considerably, so I'm all for it myself as long as the end product isn't terrible. I dunno about their other works, but they did a commendable job with the first volume of this manga.

The real problem however is that Emaqi only publish their titles in North America, which means the rest of the world, like us in Europe, have no official alternative. I'd snatch it right up if they released it on Bookwalker, but no such luck, yet. We can still read the official releases on aggregator sites that allow for the upload of official translations though, we're just not able to support the official work even if we want to.

With that said, I personally purchase the mangas I like whether or not the fan translations are ahead or not. So from that perspective I would appreciate the continuation of the fan translations until the official translations have caught up with Japan, hopefully their titles are more globally available by that point.

where can i find raw chapters of this manga?
Personally, I bought them from Bookwalker.

If you meant for free, then I'd check Rawkuma etc.

Although I would recommend buying them (not necessarily from Bookwalker), so then you can help to support the author :)

If you think they did a good job, then we clearly don't agree.
I agreed that xyzzy's reasoning for not supporting the official release wasn't reasonable. I do wonder what stuck out for you to have a negative impression of their work though? I found it plenty readable, no notable grammatical errors, and isn't any worse than the fan translation done by "Mistakes Were Made" group - which I felt did a pretty great job relative to the average standard among fan translations. My only complaint was that the language in the official adaptation felt a bit simplified, but that's not necessarily a bad thing in regards to accessibility. If anything I've seen worse translation work from other official license holders that don't do AI assisted translations, like One Peace Books, at least in regards to some of their light novels. Either way, from that point of view, and considering they are a new company, I felt their adaptation of this manga was commendable.

Your comments made me think of a few things I hadn't noticed.

Listing what I found relevant:
Legend: GK: Grace/Kenzuboro; GM: Grace's Mom; GD: Grace's Dad; AM: Anna's Mom

The play:
  • 30 years ago GM came up with the idea of having the student council members complete a "challenge" for this event.
  • The challenge she had them do was to perform a drama with genderswapped roles
  • GK and co. decided to perform a drama of the prince and pauper story because Anna remembered seeing a play version of it in her hometown.
  • Fran (a first year student) was able to find an adaptation of that play written by GM because she'd read it before
  • The script says it was written 30 years ago, but apparently there would have been traces of magical copying if it had ever been performed. Which means that GM and co. must have performed a completely different drama.
  • According to GK's daughter the genderswapped roles challenge was in the original game
  • The play is noted to fit very well with the current student council, including the part where they decided to do that specific story genderswapped
  • Play did not originally account for GK's "noble speech -- but that change was made just in time by GM. It's suggested that this was done knowing about GK's noble speech. (Though a more prosaic speculation is she didn't think Grace could/would speak like a commoner.
  • In the play, the swap ends, when someone close to a swappee recognizes who they truly are.
  • Possibly relevant: the swappee and the person who recognized them were touching when the swap was undone.
Grace's mom:
  • According to GK's daughter Grace's mom didn't show up at all in the original game.
  • GM has been away sick (supposedly) and so has not met GK.
  • It's odd that GM wrote a play about prince become more "a man of the people" by being swapped, but then raises her daughter to strict aristocratic standards, which results in Grace's poor behavior.
  • GM has some sort of deal with a fairy(?) working towards some goal.
  • GM made to sure to attend the festival, but also made sure to avoid meeting GK.
  • The way the swap works in the play could be inspired by how the fairy magic works
  • GM was very pleased with Grace's performance and wanted to meet her.
  • The fact that she's really happy that Grace did well, implies that she doesn't know that Grace is Kenzuboro, OR that she did see Grace at the festival.

Grace's whereabouts:
  • Caged Grace appeared in a GK dream. This was not in the game. Presumably this is the real Grace?
  • Grace isn't in Kenzaburo's body
  • Kenzaburo seems to be the only one in Grace's body
  • IIRC GK's daughter hasn't mentioned any of the characters GK's interacted with acting super out of character.
  • Also, we've seen at least a bit of each of the student council's POV, and they all seem pretty normal.
  • The original game was from Anna's POV, so her background should have the least ambiguity.
  • GD saw AM from a distance at the festival, and seemed surprised when she curtsied to him.
Finally, this is just my conjecture, but based on the tone of this story I think there's a limit to how wrong the fairy's magic could have gone. I think that either the magic worked exactly how it was supposed to OR it went wrong in a way that was good for everyone involved.

My theories from most to least confident are:
  1. Grace isn't in any of the characters GK has interacted with.
  2. GM has some form of future knowledge. That's how she wrote a script that matched the student council members AND the challenge they chose AND the story they wanted to perform perfectly.
  3. Undoing swap magic requires a loved one to see through you while touching you. That's why GK didn't turn back when his family recognized him.
  4. GM only got that future knowledge/started trying to save Grace relatively recently, probably around the time Grace entered the academy. Otherwise she could've just used regular parenting techniques.
  5. On a related note, the drama script was probably written recently and planted in the library for Fran to find.
  6. GM did see real Grace somewhere at the festival
  7. Grace is in Anna's mom?

Fun fact! In the original Mark Twain novel, the pauper, Tom, went on to live a long, happy life. Whereas the prince, Edward, died at the age of 15. Lmao!
