As I always I love when manga authors take their time to do some worldbuilding and fleshing out some side characters, if done properly it always enrich the story. And Slena is so cute as always and maybe she's unconsciously comparing Porta and Needly relationship to the situation of her Sensei (Dense guy) and herself (Late bloomer).

so i guess his low self esteem is because he ran away from a monster/dungeon before in his younger days?

This kinda reminds me of another manga where the MC is a middle aged guy. He has low self esteem and thinks he's super weak, because during his adventurers day he almost died against some random monster and even lost a leg. Turns out the monster he had a fight with is one of the deadliest entity in the story.
