The Wright brothers lived in a world where the idea of flying machines had been contemplated for centuries, human flight had ALREADY been attained, aluminum, electricity, precision machining and internal combustion engines did already exist and people had been building gliders for decades.
Technology doesn't develop in a vacuum.

And here we are now, running at speeds more than 5x that speed. I guess bodies get stronger as time passes, huh?
