Is there any significance to the 7th place or what
So i dig up the raw footage of Chapter 16, and the original badge at Shunpei's record table is
入賞 (Nyūshō)
SO i ask Gemini. Yeah, not the trustworthy source, but this is kinda like a participation award. While the top three spots (1st, 2nd, and 3rd) are called
入賞者 (Nyūshō-sha), the term
Nyūshō generally refers to anyone who placed within the
scoring range of a competition. You are not a champion, but your effort will not go in vain; you have been better than most of the field.
In a typical Japanese track and field meet:
- Winners: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place (usually receive medals).
- Nyūshō: Usually the top 6 or top 8 finishers.
Since Shunpei placed
7th, he made the "cut-off" to be officially recognized as a prize-winner in the event records (we can recall the dialogue of Azeno students talking about Shunpei's the chance of making top8, maybe this is cutoff list of this high jump competition).
And yeah honestly, 7th and 8th may not be much different in terms of significance, but (just my opinion) the author wants to create a quite good result for the scene. A happy gift for Shunpei's hard work and An's cheerleading, while not seem like he barely got to the last possible slot for the award.
