And now that more people are discussing this problem, they've started coming up with excuses like: "Women are poorly written," "Yuri is targeted at men," or "I only read yaoi because it has a better story." Most of the time, it's about two privileged white men sexually assaulting each other and catching feelings on a random Tuesday.

I think there are 2 main reasons why girls read BL:
- To want to evaluate the relationship between two men of different genders from a distance...
(Generally, we empathize better with the problems experienced by those of our own gender. GL could expose them to more empathy, which might lead to feelings of discomfort.)
- Of course, there are also those who read it to see two men having sex with each other.

I reading both bl and gl but i mostly prefer gl. Also theres nothing wrong with reading bl. The real problem is confusing fiction with reality and fetishizing gay people.

In short, reading BL is not a bad starting point for girls to escape real-life problems and explore their sexual orientation. The significant role of rape in these stories is problematic because:
1- The authors are generally women/girls. The characters also carry some characteristics from the author; for example, if the author believes that being sexually aroused/comfortable is bad, they might add it to say, "Look, the character didn't want it, he forced it on her."
2- The brain might try to cope with the thought of being abused by making it seem like you love that person. This could be a coping mechanism for trauma, or the author may have internalized this thought even if they weren't abused.
3- The author might have a rape fetish.

I wonder why almost every yuri has either a fujoshi character, a gay man, mlm side couple, or at least mentions yaoi, but you will never find a decent female character in a yaoi. Everything revolves around men

Even tho I only started reading/watching yuri abt 2 months ago but I can name some

Love DNA XX (instead of giving the couple a proper ending they made 2 extra chapters of them as a mlm couple)

Also, I only named the ones with mlm couple there's TONS of yuri with queer men/mentioned queer men

There is a lot of lesbian manga without barely any male character, not to mention boy couples, and plenty of gay manga with good female characters. Most of the yuri manga I've read seems to inhabit female-only world.
I wouldn't even count Utena as exception, since it's a story about a lot more than just main yuri couple, so obviously it will have varied representation, while many yuri/yaoi manga are just story of the main couple with few extra characters.

I think your reading list is just biased, as well as are the people you hear commenting are not representative of anything - if anything, yuri is far better received usually than yaoi, just look how many yuri anime adaptations are there compared to yaoi.

Why is it a problem if author has a rape fetish, if their readers also share that fetish and that's why they enjoy their manga? It's fine to have fantasy kinks.
