So Walmart did not operate in Japan under their American brand name. Eventually their operations in Japan were deemed a failure and they largely pulled out of the country. Walmart's operations outside the US are a mixed bag and if people know it it mostly reminds them of the US, not of a supermarket.
As a non-American, my earliest and most vivid impression of 'Walmart' was footage of children buying bullets there, might've been from Bowling for Columbine. So when I hear or read 'Walmart' out of context like in this chapter I often think of American gun violence rather than a supermarket, lol.
