pretty !uch what I was expecting as it fits into the Sword of Shannara/Sword of Truth trope of a villain or big bad getting hit with the knowledge of their evil deeds, and either they get purified through a truly horrific fashion, thereby beginning the process of their transformation (heel-faced-turn) or utterly annihilates them due to that truth (typically by blowing themselves up (series ending will get spoiler if you click this
Eragon Cycle
) because they can handle the truth or by purifying the evil of the lies, falsehoods, illusions, evils, etc.). In this case, there is an added component of physiology not being able to handle reality. 😂

Hmm… 🤔 so, if the MC is cursed with an undead body vs immortality, then is he prevented from having kids? If he could get his body back would he age or remain the same age? 🤔

I still think it's rather lame that the MC doesn't just resurrect folks. I get the potential for abuse and breaking the system, unwanted attention, etc., but on the other hand, THINK OF ALL THE KIDDOS & INNOCENTS GETTING SLAUGHTERED! 😭

Why does a princess matter more than the brother of one of the MCs or all of those innocent NPCs who got slaughtered? That's totally lame sauce, dude! You are withholding the ability to stop and undo senseless violence and not using it well…

I get the MC in Overlord not doing it (in RL he was kinda a dick at best), but what is this person's excuse?

I guess that's why I like the MC from Reincarnated As A Slime cuz he cares about everyone and everything in equal measure and does what he can to help. If he had resurrection magic, he'd likely use it. Obviously, old folks can't get new bodies ATM, but unnecessary death's due to disease or genocide can be undone. I mean, it does pose some problems, but on the other hand, in a darkly comical way, how would people behave if they went back to a respawn point? [Facepalm]

I was thinking the whole time on how Arc would randomly appear and resurrect him midfight. Adding another harem target for his collection

Well story wise he dont do it because he don't want people to know he can do it, people would lift heaven and earth to get that power and he don't want the attention.
Is it a lame excuse ? yes, is it believable, also yes, is it however the authors first ever novel so we have to cut him some slack.

It would have been better for the narrative if he just saved her from dyeing somehow if he never was going to plan on using it again.
Resurection in general is however bad for the narative of any story as it removes the limited amount of suspense of character death.
If everyone is aware that death is only temporary and it have no consequences it can ruin the feel off the story.

Its also for this reason Arc was not allowed to save the brother even if he likely could have.
His death was meant to be a motivator for his sister to become a stronger character as well as make us dislike the antagonists more.

@Goldenzeal @Morsealworth Yes I agree Gold—truthfully, evennas a 1st novel, this is quite good, and I think that the situation aside, it makes sense—my criticism comes more from the standpoint of costs and helping prospective authors who might be comic fans reading the comic to get ideas for their own stories—namely, from a plot perspective, resurrection tropes can be fine, but they have to have consistency (to some extent). Like, what if the resurrection got out? How would the MC have to cope? That's a viable situation. I mean, it did happen and it wasn't played. How would soldiers & the general public respond to a mass resurrection event? 🤔

From my vantage point, doing it once should have consequences (particularly, the unanticipated kind).

If you can raise the dead, what are the costs?

For example, in
Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign and its companion light novel series (plural), the cost of Resurrection is pissing off (supposedly) God/Heaven and thus bringing about the End of the World. Somebody does it, and the consequences are as expected.

If the MC were to need some kind of justification, it should come to explain itself. Otherwise, it makes the MC look less NG/LG/CG and more LN/NN. For example, if Ainz' was on a unique mission or could more meaningfully give cause to why casting "mass resurrection" would be a problem, then it could make him look less utilitarian. Like, he has the skill & by using it even once has therefore played as a living god. In doing so, he's necessitated himself to use it always in order to maximize social welfare or else he's gotta explain why he doesn't or else risk appearing evil/selfish.

An example of this is the Christian mythology around Y'shua (Jesus of Nazareth) [I'm a christian myself, but for the purposes of storytelling and myth analysis, I'm using the aforementioned language]. Y'shua has a higher purpose in eir Miracles. That purpose varies by tradition (and prior to the heresiologists, particularly during & after Constantine, there were a lot of interpretations—see writings of scholar Bartt D Ehrman for numerous examples), but ultimately, there was some explanation for those who believes the miracles happened. In Overlord, Ainz' rationale for not bringing everyone back from the dead was keeping in character. If Ainz did resurrect everyone, he'd run the risk of blowing his cover as a Big-Bad/Bigger-Bad. Not necessarily, mind you, because he could potentially explain it away as he does as to create more vassals for his nation state of supposedly unmitigated evil! But, he also is a clueless social noob who was terrible with real humans, thus kinda a jerkface, and thus making his actions of growing as a person rather believable.

8n the case of the MC in this story, he's clearly NOT a socially clueless jerkface who is socially awkward to the extreme, occasionally unfeeling, and needing grotesque levels of emotional growth—hence, my characterization problem. One the one hand, his somewhat selfish desire to "not get involved" makes sense, but at the same time, he's gone directly against that trend from the MOMENT he's started. In other words, he could resurrect people when no one is looking and write it off as "random miracle". Yeah, people would be suspicious as fuck, but it would fit more with his characterization thus far.

Like, make the guy use a token or some special restrictions like in D&D where you have to pay EXP, or the bodies have to be there, or because the last one died at a different location & his body was destroyed, either they have to find the caster & kill him/get him to undo the spell, or find where he died in order to recraft his body. Arrowverse has done a reasonable job at presenting "costs" such as craziness & the soul not being present in the body.

It makes sense that he doesn't want to disrupt the societies, but unfortunately, his very presence & that of the other resurrected player likewise by their mere presence have disrupted the world. This is what I like about the Star Ocean franchise—they took the Trek "underdeveloped world's/civilizations" protocol of the Prime Directive and consistently apply it, with the exception of world's that are threatened by alien invasions. Basically, in each story, some group of super advanced dickheads screw up these underdeveloped fantasy worlds, and in so doing, necessitate the breaching of the Prime Directive. If the MC wanted to follow a consistent geek ethic (which is what I think the author was going for, e would have had better effect by giving the MC some kind of excuse for his spellcasting. I mean, for example—by resurrecting the Princess & her guards, he's done FAR GREATER alterations to their world than by saving a town of peasants/citizens, or resurrecting a lone child/her family, the elves who are isolated & under attack/sold as slaves/etc. He had his reasons, but in doing so, he's gone & broken his own chain of reasoning for not resurrecting people.

It's not a criticism of "bad" writing, mind you, on my part. It's more an observation of character development and internal plot holes. Yeah, people do inconsistent things all the time, but they are typically a result of some kind of influence (internal or external)—like seeing the captive kiddos making him break his "non-interference" pact. He got involved because to do nothing was just too evil. He pulled a Picard/Trek.

Point being, if he did it once because of genocide, why did it stop him in the future? Was it because it was easier because no one noticed? If his teammates knew about him, then why not reveal the truth about him & try to clean up the genocide as he can? If no one can use the magic but him (and he can't teach it), his OPness is already known and mega OP to the point of epic level brokenness. It's a whole fascet of the story. He's OP. This is a page one plot point. He's kinda a jerk, but he learn to grow as a person.

The team & the tribes (elves, ninjas, etc.) keep his OP secrets. There's another player in the world creating super undead monsters & partly rules the world running around nuking the crap out of people. That kinda breaks the whole superweapon rule. Like, I get not bringing back baddies or if he were to cast resurrection magic en mass it would, it still doesn't explain why he doesn't unless he will after it's revealed conclusively that he's not the only person from another wolrd.

While I can't universalize my personality, anyone with a reasonable EQ level (Emotional Quotient) who found themselves in his position, I think, would find the levels of genocide untenable. If you had the power to ease the suffering of folks, even if you had to do it in secret, I'd do it. If only because I couldn't live with myself for not having done so! 😂

Like, all of those innocent bystanders to one crazy dude's evil! Heh.

Like—if he doesn't resurrect them, then show some C-PTSD/PTSD effects, or, if being undead as you said is screwing with his emotions, then that needs to be addressed more in characterization. Like, have him monologue with himself about all of the dead—or how he is slowly starting to lose his feelings towards others
what happens with vampires in Seraph of the End. Over time, vamps lose their humanity and start to become monsters—which is a whole characterization issue for a certain vampire in said story! 😂😂😂
. Like, if he started to care less about people, then his actions would make sense. 😂 But, since he's seeming to do the opposite, it doesn't really make sense. I still get the Prime Directive trope, but when done well, people get fucked up because of it. 😂 You can't get away from the trauma no matter how much rationalizing you put forward without sociopathic tendencies coming out. Hence, characterization.

This story is by no means alone in this area, but since I like it and I think it is generally well-done, I point it out! 😂😂😂

Anyhow, thanks for dialoguing about the plot/characters/etc.! :3

@Goldenzeal Happy Birthday! :3

Did episode one of Seraph traumatize you too? 😂 Yeah, I had to go for a walk contemplating how I wanted to dice up Ferid—😂 BAD VAMPIRE! [Spank!] Course, the recent chapters—😂 (facepalm)

So, yeah, feel free to give me a loquacious retort upon the conclusion of your birthing celebrations! :3 😂😉

But, in all seriousness, Star Ocean is an epic JRPG series that started out on the SNES, then PlayStation, and so on. Check out the wiki! It's my 2nd favorite franchise (clearly stomped FF for the no.1 spot, and was only recently deprived of the no. 1 spot by The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky/Trails of Azures/Trails of Cold Steel (see Steam & wiki for details))!

Anyhow, going back to the manga wastelands! :3 [Gotta go kill an evil white rabbit—makes me wonder if Monty Python was behind the rabbits of Doom from Secret of Mana—🤔]
