@Nick86 What the hell are you talking about? Read counts are practically flatlined and the rating has jumped off a cliff. Algorithms and search functions will skip this crap entirely. The existing readerbase is the only group engaging with the content, and out of bile fascination at that. This is a perfect example of how baiting readers with drama can go wrong. Practically the only people interacting here are people who were already following it and outsiders looking at the trainwreck. Commercially, this would mean that no one will buy volumes because the current drama can be read for free and didn't start in any physical release. The manga already sold terribly.

What exactly do you think will happen once the prez rape arc is over? Do you think the gawkers will stay? Do you think that existing readers can justify wasting anymore time out of sunk costs?

I can't even believe that its the same mangaka or he is doing that on purpose because "the old storyline" wasnt that interesting for the japanese userbase, so this is a big fuck you to all the readers idk

Again, just to re-iterate. Most people read these specifically to avoid what is happening right now in the story. Most readers that want surreal, realistic/dark stories do not read derpy ecchi harems for it. It is so retarded I am actually laughing right now at how absurd the manga is.

People bothered rating because something actually happened. The low ratings serve as a warning to stay away.
For constant readers, it's hard to give a rating when literally nothing happens for the first 13 (or 8.9) chapters. For new readers, hearing about this controversy, they're bound to skim through the plot and wonder how it got to that point.

Regardless if you're new or not, it's hard to get shounen-aimed romcom readers to give a positive rating to nearly 9 chapters of a one note gag gone on too long, followed by 3 (maybe 4) chapters of rape backstory for a character that arrived from nowhere.

@SavingPrivateRightHand, good point; I guess I thought people would want to rate a manga earlier for art style, and potential (changing it later if it goes bad). Just seems weird that a solid 400 people decided to rate it badly based off 3 bad chapters and not wait it out.

and this is whats happening to this manga already...

If the author plays it straight, the base people who wanted a cutesy romcom will leave because of the sudden insertion of rape into what was once a comedy, and the niche few who are fine with this will probably leave for actual content of this nature which is probably the author's only way of getting work after this mess.
If it's played as a joke or a fantasy, then it will disappoint the people who wanted this content for half-assing on it, and disgust the rest for using such graphic material so callously and for such a prolonged period. No one who picked this up from the start would expect rape to occur, this isn't Berserk or Wolf Guy.

In either case, I don't see anyone changing their ratings. Besides, the people who already witnessed this manga using rape as a plot device so spontaneously won't be back, anyway.

There's way too many other gyaru-themed romantic comedies that can bother to follow a basic plot at the moment (Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru, Komi-san [sort of], Gal Gohan, Anjo-san, Nagatoro) that are more worth people's time.

@SavingPrivateRightHand Gal Gohan seems to hit everything just right IMHO. She is just enough of a strong-willed character that knows what she wants and acts on it, teasing, seducing etc, without taking it too far. While at the same time not being overly sadistic about it and is instead cute and genuinely wants the dense mc's attention. It's (in my opinion) the best out of all these gyaru mangas. (That Gyaru in Komi-san is cute af as well tho.)

That aside, pretty much agree with everything you said. We read these specific types of manga to literally avoid what is happening and to just chill and turn our brains off. Anyone that read Nozoki Ana wouldn't expect it to be a fluffy derp manga without any drama. So when the heavy (screwed up ) drama hit, it wasn't out of left field and not in line with the premise of the manga.

I'm more into Sono Bisque since it seems to be developing its characters and plot, with less emphasis on "look at this GYARU, she is a GYARU". The rest seem to be spinning their wheels with the cutesy fun, much like what this was doing before.

Of all of these manga, I was expecting Nagatoro to pull a stunt like this, given the author's "other" work. Even the author of Chio-chan ended their manga gracefully.

I dunno, I'm reading how people think it came outta nowhere and this is going all to hell, but I think there's an actual point and the latest chapter (Specifically it's cover) is what gave me this theory. You can disagree with it and think it's going to hell in a handbasket still, but allow me to express since you all did:

First off the borderline porn we've been sing has been going on since chapter 1 and has been a bit cutesy. We wanted that. I agree with that. Chiriko is this sunny girl with an easy-going attitude but dresses proactively. Enter the StuCo President who is clearly cast to be the love rival. Unlike Chiriko who's had this good and sunny life, we're seeing the opposite side of someone who went through a seriously dark period and was sexually assaulted (not raped. Rape is actual the actual act of intercourse. Sexual assault is everything else. Just as unforgivable, I know, but to me rape is still worse.). However, before the actual rape happens, that's when Kaji somehow saves the day. This isn't even the first time this plot device was used. "Real no Heroine wa Irimasen!" also had an almost-rape situation occur (twice, in fact) and even the MC was almost raped by another guy. And yet the story continues on being not near as bad despite this plot point. I legitimately feel we'll see the same thing here once the flashback is over.

We're gonna see more of the fan service and the sexually explicit, but I seriously doubt we're going to see anything bad like this once this flashback is over (kinda hard to top in terms of being messed up anyway). I don't think the plot point is the issue, just that it's been as stretched out as it has been so far. I give it another 2 chapters before this is over and things will go back to being goofy and light-hearted again.

@SavingPrivateRightHand I do enjoy that one as well. I just didn't like the male mc as much. It has good character progression as you said, so he is definitely getting better. I actually really like the lead female. Probably the best-designed gyaru out of all of them. But, I read Gal Gohan first and really like the easy-going attitude it has. So, if even slightly, I prefer it over all the others. Sono Bisque is a very close second.

And, I agree with Nagatoro. I still to this day cannot bring myself to enjoy it. It's mainly biased on my end because of all the annoying gender BS going on in the west right now. So it just creeps me out with all the fans getting excited over the female being so much more dominant than the male. Excluding my bias tho, ya, the author has really heavy fetishes and not only does it show, I know it can get worse and surprised it hasnt.
