Now this is what GATE excels at, showing that while having the advantage, it's not one sided, and showing their allies who have learned to trust, work with, and adapt. Seeing the camaraderie between the locals and the JSDF, and the old king loving every minute of it. Flamethrower is prohibited under Protocal III of the Geneva Convention, so they are illegal, but there's a caviat.
The thing about the Protocol III is it only forbids the use of incendiary weapons on civilian targets, not military ones. So you can still use flamethrower on military targets like bunkers, trenches, caves, etc.

I had read that in the Second World War the flamethrower position was fraught. It's a cruel and horrifying weapon, and so if the operator is captured they would be given particular attention by the captors.
