That was actually a decent plan, with good on-the-fly improvisation; he wasn't going all Kaeikaku Doori with it, and adjusted the strategy when it was needed; even better, he used all his resources, including himself, in exactly the ways they were needed...
LOL... now that I think of it, his strategic planning and tactical thinking were so good that it read like it was all luck!
