miscommunications is my least favourite trope in a romcom but it super works in here somehow
That's because miscommunication is easily solvable by, well, proper communication, which is something the characters actively end up avoiding (or rather, they go out of their way to avoid it)!
But in the case of Nozaki-kun, the miscommunication is done for comedy, it plays on reasonable misconceptions an outsider would have with the catch that their conclusions end up being too outlandish, but all in all, the consequences are kept to a minimum.
That's why miscommunication works here, whereas it fails in a lot of other stories.
