While doing cooking for the first time in a while can be draining, it's a form of concentration that gives specific rewards. It's meditation that provides for the body as well as the mind.
Her mum is right, same reason why you should exercise, in the end the only one you have to rely on is yourself, you only have one body, one chance at life.

I'm glad that she's taking steps back from the abyss. Soon she'll feel the warmth of life upon her back and be able to smile freely, daily. I can't wait to see that smile.

"meditation" brother i have never been more anxious in my life than cooking a moderately complex meal. timing like three separate things on top of the consequence of ruining the food = wasting money is rough. i've cooked for myself for 10 yrs and i've never found it anything but stressful regardless of the dish

Good for her!

I normally refrigerate leftovers and eat stuff I've cooked for a week before I throw it out, what's with that I can't eat it all by tomorrow? Fish dishes don't last that long of course, but beef or pork should be fine! Also freezing it should have worked. I make my own chicken broth and freeze it for future recipes, and it lasts for months. Right now I have some frozen containers of beef stew waiting if I get too sick to make dinner sometime.

I was like this for the first few months or so when I started cooking. The answer is never try to imitate your mom, grandmas, aunts, uncles, etc when they cooked. They were super-humans who crossed jungles with tigers and rivers full of piranhas just to go to school. Juggling multiple pots and pans over the fire was nothing for them.

Reserve time enough to cook without stress. In my case at least 4 hours, usually weekends. Pre-cut everything that needs cutting. Put in separate plates, pots, etc. Pre-measure everything that needs measure. Put in separate cups, etc. I do all of this sitting at the kitchen table. Take everything that you need there, the ingredients, knifes, cuting boards, containers, plates, etc. Much more confortable. Take your time.

Don't try to cook/fry/boil everything at once. For example, Yakisoba. I cook the noodles first. After they are done and cooling back in it's own pot I start frying the meats, etc. Once the meats and vegetables are fried/sauted I mix the pasta back in, it will still be warm.

Beans and Rice. I do the rice first, one day before as it's very easy and quick. Eat it with fried eggs, omelete, meats, vegetables, etc. Freeze half of it. The next day I do the beans in the pressure cooker. Fry more meats if I have to, heat the rice that's not frozen.

Nowadays I can do more stuff at the same time but for the first couple of years I took this 'patient' method and it worked. Took more time but didn't waste food. With this 'take your time, pre-cut-pre-plan everything, one thing at a time' method the stress goes away and it really became 'meditative'. I cook in big batches to last for a few days. Freeze a part of it if it goes bad too fast.
